Nerve Hydrodissection
Nerve Hydrodissection
Peripheral nerves entrapment is a common cause of pain.
Nerve irritation may occur in any site they pass through anatomical structures like canal, fascia or scar tissue . As a result of nerve compression its edema may occur with characteristic for neuropathic pain symptoms like numbness, tingling, burning. In advanced stage muscle strength gets weakened with accompanying muscle fat atrophy. Hydrodissection is a precise nerve separation from the surrounding tissue by using a fluid pressure. As a result of nerve decompression its edema and accompanying neuropathic symptoms start decreasing. The nerve begins to regenerate itself. The period of nerve regeneration is very slow but the first clinical effects can be felt just a few days after the procedurę is done. The hydrodissection should usually be repeated several times.
Indications for hydrodissection:
- symptomatic swelling of the nerve,
- symptomatic mechanical nerve damage,
- no improvement after conservative treatment,
- developing neuroma with accompanying symptoms.
What does the procedure entail?
The procedure is performed only under ultrasound guidance. It involves placing the needle in the immediate vicinity of the nerve and injecting dextrose solution to separate the nerve from a surrounding tissue. Sometimes it is recommended to use dextrose in combination with steroid.
Dr. Marcin Goczewski performs nerve hydrodissection only under ultrasound guidance in order to increase the chance of successful therapy and minimize the risk of complications.
