Baker Cyst

A Baker Cyst is a fluid-filled cyst localized on the medial side of popliteal fossa.

In fact it is a bursa connected with the knee joint. The Baker Cyst can get larger and make it difficult to bend a knee. Sometimes the Baker Cyst can get inflamed with accompanying symptoms like pain and swelling or even rupture with spill the inflamed fluid along the calf. Symptoms of Baker Cyst can mimic deep vein thrombosis.

It is recommended only to observe the Baker Cyst when there are no other symptoms. In the case of inflammation we can apply anti-inflammatory drugs or evacuate the contents by injecting a steroid afterwards. Baker Cyst evacuation does not guarantee long term recovery. There are some articles in medical literature confirming effectiveness of prolotherapy in decreasing Baker Cyst size.

Dr. Marcin Goczewski performs Baker Cyst evacuation, steroid injection and knee prolotherapy only with ultrasound guidance.
