Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Myofascial Pain Syndrome
Disorder of the myofascial unit can be the cause of acute or chronic pain.
The myofascial pain syndrome is characterized by the presence of very tender trigger points. The factor activating trigger points may be emotional stress or excessive exercise. It is proved that myofascial pain can accompany other pain syndromes like neck pain, migraine or temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
The trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle located within abnormal muscle tissue.
Diagnosis:
- presence of taut, tender band of the muscle,
- muscle pain during stretching and tension,
- muscle pain focusing on trigger points,
- muscle weakness.
Treatment:
- anti-inflammatory drugs,
- manual therapy,
- change lifestyle.
The alternative method of treatment of the myofascial pain is prolotherapy with concentrated dextrose. Clinical studies proved much better blood circulation inside the muscle after dextrose injection. One of the hypothesis about myofascial pain says that it is due to lack of good blood circulation inside the muscle.
Dr.Marcin Goczewski performs prolotherapy only under ultrasound guidance.
