Piriformis Muscle Syndrome
The piriformis is a small, flat muscle, pyramidal in shape that originates from the anterior part of the sacrum and attaches into the greater trochanter.
Normally this muscle lies immediately on the sciatic nerve. In the case of prolonged muscle tension it can irritate the nerve causing pain radiating to the leg. In the piriformis muscle syndrome the piriformis muscle is very tender to palpation. The diagnosis is based on patient’s history and radiological examinations. Sometimes diagnostic block is very helpful.
Treatment:
- rehabilitation,
- anti-inflammatory drugs,
- steroid injection.
