The cause of carpal tunnel syndrome is median nerve compression in the carpal tunnel.
Its the most common nerve entrapment site in the human body. Predisposed to carpal tunnel syndrome are patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, hormonal replacement therapy, rhematoid arthritis and corticosteroid use.
Carpal tunnel syndrome has been associated with some certain jobs including:
- musician,
- clerk,
- hair dresser,
- painter,
- dental hygienist,
- professional gardener.
Indications for carpal tunnel ultrasound examination:
- neuropathic symptoms of the median nerve,
- thumb muscle atrophy,
- no improvement after rehabilitation and anti-inflammatory drug treatment.
Preparing for the examination:
