Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

The iliotibial band is a longitudinal reinforcement of the fascia lata with a width of 6cm.

In the hip region the iliotibial band is the continuation of the tensor fascia muscle and the guteus maximus muscle. At the knee level the iliotibial band attaches to Gerdy’s tubercle on the anterolateral aspect of the tibia. The action of ITB is to abduct, extend, and laterally rotate the hips. It also takes part in knee stabilisation.

Symptoms:

  • pain on the lateral side of the knee during running,
  • pain on the lateral side of the knee after running,
  • the trochanteric pain.

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis is based on the patient’s history and radiological examinations. Sometimes a diagnostic block is very helpful.

Conservative Treatment:

  • rehabilitation,
  • anti-inflammatory drugs.

Interventions:

  • dry needling,
  • hialuronic acid injection,
  • prolotherapy,
  • steroid injection,
  • PRP.

Dr. Marcin Goczewski performs all mentioned above interventions under ultrasound guidance.
