Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) Osteoarthritis Of The Knee
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) Osteoarthritis Of The Knee
The most common symptoms of knee osteoarthritis are pain, stiffness, restriction of mobility and edema.
The cause of these symptoms is progression of a degenerative changes of a knee joint. Knee osteoarthritis leads to narrowing of joint space and osteophyte formation. The risk factors for knee osteoarthritis are obesity, knee instability, poor posture and age.
Diagnosis is mainly based on patient’s history, physical and radiologic examinations.
In the case of lack of response to conservative treatment one of therapeutic options is applying platelet rich plasma injection (PRP). Platelet rich plasma is a therapy using individual’s own blood. After centrifugation of collected blood we get a plasma very rich in platelets which stimulate regeneration of a knee joint due to release of growth factors.
Many studies confirmed PRP as an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis.
Indication to procedure:
- no response to conservative treatment,
- osteoarthritis confirmed by radiologic examination,
- contraindications to surgery.
Intra articular PRP injection is a very safe procedure. After the injection it’s recommended:
- take a rest for 2 weeks,
- avoid anti-inflammatory medications,
- avoid steroid injection.
Dr. Marcin Goczewski performs platelet rich plasma injections only under ultrasound guidance, to ensure precise medicine injection and reduce the risk of complications.
