Dorsal Scapular Nerve Entrapment Syndrome

Dorsal Scapular Nerve Entrapment Syndrome

Pain radiating from the neck along the medial border of the scapula is not a rare cause of patient’s complaints.

It is commonly diagnosed as a cervical pain but it can also be the dorsal scapular nerve entrapment.

Anatomy:

The Dorsal Scapular Nerve arises from the brachial plexus from the ventral ramus of the C5 nerve root. Once the nerve leaves the C5 it pierces the middle scalene muscle  coursing deep to the levator scapulae muscle and the rhomboid muscles.

Symptoms:

  • pain radiating along medial border of scapula,
  • middle scalene muscle pain at palpation,
  • numbness, burning,
  • levator scapulae muscle and rhomboid muscle dysfunction causing scapular winging,

Treatment:

  • rehabilitation,
  • posture correction,
  • drug treatment,
  • dorsal scapular nerve hydrodissection,

Dr. Marcin Goczewski performs the dorsal scapular nerve hydrodissection using 5% dextrose under ultrasound guidance.
